Church votes for Church-State separation, Islamic Council agrees
Friday, December 1st, 2006The general synod of the Lutheran Church of Norway announced this week that it would disassociate itself from the Norwegian state. The decision was taken in line with a government commission which recommended in January this year that the privileged civic relationship of the church with the state should be abolished. (Lutheran World Federation: “Church of Norway Synod Supports Proposal to End State-Church System“.) The move also reflects similar changes made in Sweden in 2000.
Today, the Islamic Council of Norway has agreed that the move towards secularization is beneficial for all. “It is important to achieve equality between all faiths and denominations. We are not talking of Christians against Muslims.” (See Norway Post.)
